Type Of Pearls and How To Buy Pearls- Steps (with Pictures)

Hi Guys! Today I want to help you guys how you buy your pearls and what kind of pearls they have out there 😉

Sounds interesting? That’s great! let’s get started.

There are 4 different type of pearls:

Akoya Pearls

Japanese Akoya pearls appeared in the 1930s. These pearls are the classic cultured pearls of Japan their size are between 3mm to 8mm. the most common Akoya size is 6 mm to 7 mm. This makes a larger Akoya cultured pearl rare and much more valuable. Akoya pearls can be found in  Japan, China and to a lesser extent, Vietnam, Thailand, and Australia. The vast majority of the world’s Akoya pearls are produced in Japan. China has been successful in producing Akoya pearls within their own waters. However, at this time they are unable to produce as brilliant a luster as high-quality Japanese Akoya cultured pearls. The Akoya pearl is either white or cream in body color and can have yellow, pink or blue hues. Some Akoya pearls achieve a rosé or green overtone. It typically has an excellent, good or fair luster, which is why the Akoya is such a prized gem. The best pearls have clean surface quality and acceptable nacre. Akoya pearls are mostly perfect round.

South Sea Pearls

South Sea pearls appeared in the 1950s. South sea pearls are much larger than the average pearl, the smoothness and roundness of these pearls are exceptional. The size of south sea pearls starts from 9mm and can reach to giant 15-mm. Their rarity is due to the fact that growing larger pearls requires a great deal of time, during which many things can go wrong: the oysters can die, the pearl can become misshapen, etc.  Their most common colors are white, silver, and gold.

Tahitian Pearls

Tahitian pearl appeared in the 1960s, Tahitian pearls also known for the black pearls. They are produced by Black-Lipped oyster which is found in the waters of French Polynesia. The Tahitian Pearls exhibit an almost metallic aspect, which lends itself well to their mysterious beauty. Very few of them are truly black, and these would be quite costly because of their rarity. Tahitian black pearls are extremely rare since only one out of about 10,000 oysters contains a pearl. Species of this shell are widely distributed throughout tropical Indo-Pacific waters from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of California and from Japan to the southern islands of the Pacific. More specifically, this oyster also is found in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Panama and the Gulf of California.

Chinese freshwater cultured pearls appeared in 1970. Freshwater pearls come with different type of shapes that is very unique. They characteristically range in shape from very baroque to near-round. Freshwater pearls also come in the different type of color such as the rainbow of natural pastel colors such as lavender, pink, and every shade in between. Their sizes range of freshwater pearls are from the tiny seed pearls measuring 1 or 2 mm in diameter to 15 mm and larger. Freshwater pearls are mostly found in China and Japan but the freshwater market is overwhelmingly dominated by Chinese pearl farms, which account for nearly all freshwater pearls sold today.

Now It’s time I let you guys know how to buy your pearls 😉

There is 6 factor that you want to consider before buying your pearls ;). The seven value factors are:

❤ Size : Pearl size is measured in millimeters. For spherical pearls, the diame-
ter is measured. For other shapes, the length and width are measured. The perfect size for a pearl is 6mm or 7mm. As with other gems, pearl value is linked to rarity. Whether you consider natural or cultured pearls, larger pearls are rarer than smaller pearls. It follows, then, that when other value factors are equal, greater value is attributed to larger pearls.

❤ Shape: Most of the consumer thinks of pearls as round this cause millions of round pearls strands sold around the world. However, there are a lot of different type of pearls shapes there are:

Round: Appears round to the eye

Near-round: Appears almost round to the eye

Oval: Rounded oblong shape

Button: Circular shape with flattened bottom and flattened or domed top

Drop: Short for teardrop; has rounded ends, with one more tapered than the other

Baroque: Pearls have an irregular shape

❤ Color: White Pearls that come in different hue are much more valuable because of the rarity. Pearls occur in a broad range of hues, body color, and orient. There are warm hues like yellow, orange, and pink, and cool hues like blue, green, and violet. In tone, pearls have a wide range, from light to dark. Pearl colors are low in saturation, which means that they tend to be muted and to have a soft, subtle quality.

Luster: Of the seven pearl value factors, luster might be the most important. Luster is what gives a pearl its unique beauty.

There are five categories of Luster:

• Excellent—Reflections are bright, sharp, and distinct

• Very Good—Reflections appear bright and near-sharp

• Good—Reflections are bright but not sharp and slightly hazy around

the edges

• Fair—Reflections are weak and blurred

• Poor—Reflections are dim and diffused

Within a pearl type, when other value factors are equal, the higher the luster, the more valuable the pearl.

❤ Surface Quality: Pearls have a variation types of surface. The surface clean are the most valuable and beautiful because of the rarity. There are 4 different type of pearls surface categories:

• Clean—Pearls can be blemish-free (spotless) or contain minute surface characteristics that are very difficult to see when examined by a trained observer

• Lightly Spotted—Pearls show minor surface irregularities when examined by a trained observer

• Moderately Spotted—Pearls show noticeable surface characteristics

• Heavily Spotted—Pearls show obvious surface irregularities that might affect durability

If a spotless pearl also rates highly in the other value factors, it’s extremely valuable.

❤ Nacre Quality: High-quality nacre is durable and has excellent or good luster. The GIA system uses nacre thickness and appearance to evaluate nacre quality.

The GIA Pearl Description System rates nacre quality according to three classifications:

• Acceptable—Nucleus not noticeable, no chalky appearance

• Nucleus Visible—The cultured pearl shows evidence of its bead nucleus

through the nacre

• Chalky Appearance—The cultured pearl has a dull appearance

Acceptable nacre quality is essential to any cultured pearl with significant value.
